SMEAR TEST
SAVE LIVES
NHS CERVICAL SCREENING PROGRAMME
Helps prevent cervical cancer by identifying early, pre-cancerous changes in the cervix.
The test — traditionally called a smear test — is offered to women and anyone with a cervix aged 25 to 64.
- The first invitation is sent a few months before turning 25
- Thereafter, the test is repeated every 5 years
- Trans men and non-binary people with a cervix are also eligible for screening, with the invitation process depending on their gender registration
The programme saves thousands of lives each year in the UK through early detection and treatment of cervical cancer.
